Monroe Area Council for the Arts considers educational outreach programming to be one of the most vital parts of its mission. These programs have included artist residencies such as Fiber Arts in the Classroom, the Monroe County Young Authors Conference, Missoula Children’s Theatre Workshop, Arts Camps, Appalachian Roots Music Residency, and numerous other workshops led by professional artists.

Each year, MACA’s educational outreach programming serves thousands of Monroe County children. Well over half of Monroe County children come from low-income families who are unable to afford enrichment activities. However, through the support of Friends of the Arts contributors, MACA continues to offer arts programming at little or no cost to the children of our community.

2013 ARTS CAMP: “LIFE’S A CIRCUS”

MACA’s series of one week arts camps feature instruction in music, art, drama, stage, set design, and dance led by professional teachers.

The camps are open to children in Grades K-6 (have completed kindergarten and sixth grade). The cost is $60/week and includes lunch and a t-shirt. The week concludes with a performance showcase on Friday for friends and family. The camps are held Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. -2 p.m. Payment options for the camps are: Pay half of the fee when submitting the registration and the second half by the first day of camp; pay the full fee with the registration; or pay on the first day of camp.

In addition to the “Life’s a Circus” camps, MACA will also be offering a visual art class with instruction in drawing, painting, watercolor, and other media for children in Grades 5-8 during the same time and location as the camps. Instructor for the class is Cindy Giljames, a professional artist, graphic designer, and teacher.

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. The application process requires a recommendation from a teacher or adult who is well-acquainted with the child. The postmark deadline for the scholarship application to be submitted is May 24.
