Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) lost a dear friend when Barbara Arwood, a well-known and vibrant educator, literacy advocate, dairy farmer, and arts supporter passed away in August 2012. A founder of MACA, Barbara invited members of the community who had an interest in the arts to a meeting of the Hiwassee College Lyceum Committee in the spring of 1993. That meeting planted the seed which resulted in the organization of MACA. During the past 28 years, MACA has established a reputation as a leader in providing quality arts programs for the children, families, and communities of southeast Tennessee.
In recognition of the essential role Barbara played in the founding and growth of MACA, the Board of Directors is holding a concert and art supply drive as a Tribute to Barbara Arwood. MACA invites you to come out enjoy some sunshine during our fresh air concert and honor a woman who dedicated her life to improving the lives of children and adults through art and literacy. Barbara, an honorary lifetime MACA board member, was born in Iowa, graduated from the Mississippi University for Women, and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 1977, she moved with her husband Vic to a dairy farm near Madisonville. As an English teacher and Director of Student Support Services at Hiwassee College, Barbara had a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of young adults.
